Chapter Eleven

Kaida’s jaw dropped as she watched the ice cubes spin across the table between them.

Dakota grabbed a napkin and wiped the table before snatching up several more napkins to mop up the mess. “Sorry,” he mumbled.

She grabbed a fistful of napkins and helped, feeling a little embarrassed for him.

Dakota had feelings for her? She thought he was just being friendly by taking her out, or giving her a break from the hectic work environment.

She’d been stressing for days about digging up the right dirt. The phone calls coming through for Roberts Inc., the files, even minutes from meetings hadn’t given her much. Not even that strange phone call had gone anywhere.

“This is exactly what I needed.” She hoped to reassure him.

Dakota looked up at her as he dropped the wet ball of napkins onto his plate. “I had no idea I was going to say that. I mean, I did want to ask you. But not like that.” He shook his head as if trying to find the right words. “Next time I speak, I’ll make sure there’s not a beverage nearby.”

There it was again. That vulnerable side to him. It was almost cute. It was hard to believe he was a self-absorbed jerk, too uptight to be friendly to anyone. Yet, unwittingly, he had entrusted information to her that could potentially harm his future endeavors for the company. He even believed she’d been handling a work call for him this morning. Except it had been Roger she had really been talking to.

If Kaida hadn’t realized Dakota had been the room, she might have blown her chances for good.

That he wanted to take her out again was unexpected. Of course, her immediate thought was to politely decline his offer. She planned to quit as soon as the article published.

The problem was, as much as she didn’t want to, it would be in her best interest to accept another date.

She wadded the napkins and set them on her empty plate.

Dakota’s head was down as he focused on finishing his meal.

“Yes,” she said.

He set down his fork and glanced up at her as if confused.

“I’d like to go out with you again.” Wow, even she was surprised by how easily those words glided out of her. Of course, she was only pretending to like him.

“You choose where, I insist. I don’t want to take you somewhere that carries a bad memory.”

“This time, Frank’s Café is a better memory.” No! Doggone it. Now she knew what ‘slip of the tongue’ meant.

Get the job done, she silently scolded herself.

Dakota’s eyes lit up. “I’m glad to hear that.”

You won’t be glad come Monday, she thought, and a pinch of remorse smacked her.

Well, at least with him liking her as more than his assistant, getting answers for her article would be right at her fingertips. But she had to work fast. Really fast.

Luckily for her, the waiter hadn’t noticed her. But she had been in a total state of panic having to pretend not being here with Dakota before.
